National Volunteer Week (April 10-16, 2011)
Celebrating Our Community’s Volunteers
National Volunteer Week is the largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism that our country has. Each year Volunteer Victoria is proud to lead local celebrations of our community’s more than 138,000 volunteers (that’s one in three Victorian’s) who are the lifeblood of our community year-round.
Volunteers Grow Community and contribute their time and skills to many valuable programs and services that we all rely upon. Whether teaming up to build housing for the homeless, or individually helping a new Canadian make Victoria their home, locally volunteers contribute more than 23 million hours a year to our community.
These incredible individuals build community and make Victoria a much better place in which to live. Getting you involved in building community is the work of Volunteer Victoria. Volunteer Victoria currently works with nearly 300 non-profit organizations, and refers more than 16,500 volunteers to them each year.
You can find volunteers doing everything from managing a blog to developing on-line training. Volunteers also share the wonder of science, provide leadership on boards, teach art to kids, do financial planning, hold frail hands, support families in crisis, bring joy through music, build nature trails, make history come alive, and so very much more.
Once a year we honour them, but they’re there for us every day of the year. During this National Volunteer Week, we give our heartfelt thanks to each of you who give so willingly of your time and expertise.
