Once again, it is the time of year when we start to receive larger volumes of calls from individuals and groups looking to volunteer over the Christmas period.
Christmas is, after all, a time when we focus more attention on helping others and giving back. So it might seem hard to believe that volunteer positions are sometimes not as plentiful during this time of year.
We are so fortunate to live in a community that understands that volunteers are needed all year round. And it is because of this, the need to serve the homeless, pack food hampers and so much more, is often satisfied. Thankfully, caring volunteers take on these important jobs every day of the year.
So what can you do to make a difference and get involved? We encourage you to think about sharing your “spirit of giving” all year round. Check out our online database of volunteer opportunities often to see how you can be Santa even in July!
There are still volunteer needs during the holiday season for such important roles as gathering donations for those in need. We have had a large number of calls from our member non-profits to say there is a great need for donations of gently used warm coats (for adults and children of all sizes). There is also always a need for new warm socks, gloves and scarves, food as well as toiletries. This year the need is greater than ever so organizing a sock, coat, toy and/or food drive are all ways that you can truly make an important difference this season. Here are just a few suggestions of places that could really use the above donations: Burnside Gorge Community Centre, Cridge Centre for the Family, James Bay Community Project, Mustard Seed, Our Place, Salvation Army, Single Parent Resource Centre, and Victoria Cool Aid Society. Check out our website for a complete listing of our members.
Here is a list of some other POSSIBLE places to volunteer that might still need your help this season. Be sure to ask for the Coordinator of Volunteers. We encourage you to call as soon as possible to offer your support. Don’t forget about our seniors and other adults during the holidays as well!
At this time, we would also like to thank our community’s more than 138,000 volunteers for giving their gifts of time and financial resources this past year. Our local non-profits, including Volunteer Victoria, just could not do what we do without your valued support! Thank you for enriching our community and making Victoria and area such a great place to call “home”.
Wishing you all the best of the holiday season and may 2012 shine bright for us all!
