Paint Yourself Into the Volunteer Scene with the TD Art Gallery Paint-In!

The following blog post was written by Graydon Leigh, a political science major at the University of Victoria. Graydon grew up in Port Coquitlam, BC and aspires to be a journalist. He is an avid hockey fan and is honoured to write about volunteerism in the Victoria community

The TD Bank and Art Gallery of Greater Victoria are hosting their 25th annual “Paint In” on Moss Street in central Victoria on Saturday, July 21st from 10AM to 6PM. The event presents a unique opportunity for appreciators of a wide variety of media to explore their passion and see what talent the island has to offer the world.

Also regarded as the “Moss Street Paint In”, this is the largest visual art event onVancouver Island; the only place where one can see 160 talented artists practicing their craft in the same place. There will be live music, featuring international, family friendly performances.

Event organizers are calling for a large group of positively, inspired volunteers to help maintain the high levels of success the paint in has enjoyed for so many years.

With this year being the city of Victoria’s 150th birthday, over 35,000 people are expected to attend. This makes for a day of excitement and nervousness for the Paint In’s organizers. A most important volunteer role will be intersection attendants, needed to help the local police department direct the safe flow of vehicles and pedestrians-especially between Dallas Rd and Fort St.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Katie Hughes; Visitor Services Supervisor and Volunteer Coordinator. Evident in her voice was a passion for the artistic culture espoused by the event and the art gallery. There is no doubt that this event provides the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria with a premium opportunity to promote the values they embody and the world-class works of art that can be found within the recesses of their building
