VOLUNTEER:

Reading Buddy: The Greater Victoria Public Libraries are looking for teen volunteers to pair up with younger children and participate with them in reading and writing based activities.  The commitment is for an hour a week for eight weeks, the program running from March 6th – April 24thFor more information contact one of the local branches of visit www.gvpl.ca . Phone numbers and training hour depend on the branch nearest you!

Everybody and their Dog: If you would be interested in being on a committee to plan a brand new Victoria event then check out Capital City Volunteers as they search for people (just you or you and a family member) to plan the Everybody and their Dog event.  It would take about three hours a week and you must know word processing.  If this appeals to you then contact Karina at 250-380-0660 or e-mail ccvol@shaw.ca

Dinner Guest: The Saanich Peninsula Hospital is looking for volunteers to come join them for Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner from Monday – Sunday in order to give some extra care and pleasantries to their residents and patients.  Training is provided, and this is a wonderful way to meet people and spread some joy.  Additionally, you can be a Social Butterfly and spend time playing cards, playing games, or reading with the people at the hospital.  If you would like to help, call Chris at 250-652-7519 or e-mail christine.foster@viha.ca

YMCA Counsellor: If you’re 17 or 18 and would like a chance to work with kids and pre-teens, then perhaps you would like to sign up soon to be a counsellor at the YMCA’s Camp ThunderbirdIt would be a fun opportunity with a lot of time outdoors meeting great people and spending your summer helping a great organization.  If you would to do this, training takes place from June 26th – July 1stTo find out more contact Peter Gibbs at 250-418-1840 or e-mail pgibbs@victoriay.com . Peer Tutor: The Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria is looking for youth who excel in one or more areas of school and would be willing to help a peer aged 12-20 with their school work for one hour a week.  Volunteers are required to attend a training session as well as commit to three months of the tutoring program.  This is a great way to share your knowledge and to help youth in your community get ahead.  If you would like to take part then contact Leanna Plat at 250-288-4728 ex 125 or e-mail lpatt@icavictoria.org

EVENTS:

Intrepid Theatre: Starting January 30th, students can get a discount to watch Intrepid Theatre performances.  If you arrive 10 minutes before the show and present you student card then you need only pay $10!  It’s a great way to see indie theatre at a low price while helping a great cause.  To find out more check out their Facebook listing at http://bit.ly/8HQtV1 

Teens at the Library: The Greater Victoria Public Library has lots of activities coming up for youth to take part in.  They have book clubs, writing workshops, the Freedom to Read contest, and a classic video game tournament.  For those who are interested they also have volunteer opportunities with Reading Buddies and the Victoria Youth Council.  For more information visit www.gvlp.ca 

United Way – Youth Initiative Grants: Do you have a community project in mind? Apply to the United Way of Greater Victoria for an opportunity to receive up to $3,000 for youth led/focused projects. March 15, 2010 is the application deadline and you can download the application form and see the funding guide to see if you would like to apply! Good Luck!
