SUMMARY:Annual Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival (ages 15-29)
DESCRIPTION:The Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival is in its 97th year and it requires many volunteers. The Festival takes place from April 3rd to May 11th with adjudicated sessions and Highlights Concerts in several venues around the city. Adjudicated sessions will take place during morning\, afternoon and some evenings. There will be performances in Dance\, Vocal and Instrumental disciplines and the performers range from Elementary School age\, through the teens\, to some adults. \n\n\n\nDo you have the time or are you interested in either cashiering or acting as an adjudicator’s assistant? Please help us with this important opportunity for our local music students to showcase their talents and possibly gain the chance to compete in the 2024 Provincial or National Festivals. There are some sections that could use a small group of volunteers (probably 4 or 5) to help with the Choral\, Band\, Orchestra\, or School Dance sections.  These require volunteers to usher performers to the stage from warmup rooms\, as well as act as Cashiers and an Adjudicator’s Secretary. WThere are opportunities for single volunteers for cash and Secretary at sessions involving solo performers in Instrumental\, Voice and Studio Dance. Studio Dance volunteers need to have a criminal record check to work backstage. \n\n\n\nSessions take place in morning\, afternoon or evening\, weekdays and weekends\, depending on how many participants have registered and whether they are junior or senior levels. \n\n\n\nDo you want to volunteer individually? Please contact Liz Willis\, Unit 8\, by phone at 250-385-6860 or by email at howard.liz@shaw.ca.

SUMMARY:Talk from Jeffrey with Global Activators (Ages 15-29)
DESCRIPTION:Are you aged 16-24\, passionate about protecting our living planet\, wanting to take effective action\, and make friends across the world? If yes\, Global Activators wants you to join them! \n\n\n\nGlobal Activators is a charitable organization with the mission of protecting life on Earth. They aim to both secure biological diversity (i.e. the variety of living species on our planet) and advance the solutions to the climate crisis. Of course these global problems are huge\, and individual actions like recycling can sometimes feel futile\, but there is transformative power when we join together in large numbers with a focused goal. \n\n\n\nTheir youth gatherings and advocacy campaigns provide you with the training\, structure\, and support to help maximize your impact for positive change. They are building a massive global alliance to protect our planet that spans cultures\, generations\, political identities\, and national borders — and it’s all being powered by young people! \n\n\n\nThe planet’s forests have a very important function in stabilizing the global climate\, provide the home to countless creatures\, and are the repository of much of the Earth’s fresh water. Protecting and restoring forests is essential for combating the climate emergency and the biodiversity crisis. They believe young people will take a decisive role in making this happen. The time is now.

SUMMARY:'The Awakening of the Dragon and Lion' Dance (Ages 15-29)
DESCRIPTION:Come watch the very first ‘Awakening of the Dragon and Lion’ dance being held in Esquimalt! Volunteer Victoria youth programmers will be present so that it can be a shared experience for youth hoping to celebrate the Lunar New Year and explore the beauty of another culture 🙂 \n\n\n\nOrigin of lion danceThe lion dance dates back to 3rd century BC. There are many myths of how lions and lion dance originated. The lion is not a native animal of China. One myth is also the origin of the lunar New Year celebration. There was a monster named “nian” (year) that came to the village once a year to eat the harvest and the people. The villagers always fled to the mountains to avoid being eaten by “nian.” One year a lion showed up and chased away the monster however in the following year the lion wasn’t there. The villagers made a lion costume and had two people wear it to scare away “nian\,” in addition to the lion the villagers wore red and played loud drums and set off firecrackers\, since “nian” didn’t like any of these either this is why the lunar new year is celebrated with all these aspects. The lion eats lettuce which is known as Saang choy in Cantonese\, if it eats lettuce the act is said to symbolize spreading wealth and prosperity\, being hit with the lettuce it spits out is considered lucky. The Lion Dance is a Chinese folk tradition and an important part of traditional kung fu schools. It is an essential part of Chinese holidays as well as important functions such as weddings and business openings. Lion dancing is performed at such events to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune\, happiness and prosperity.
