Meet Isla. The 87 year old senior gets up every Friday at 6 a.m. to get ready for a morning of volunteering with the Sendial program. a service for seniors unable to do their own grocery shopping Isla has been a dedicated volunteer at the Thrifty Food Fairfield location for 23 years. Growing up on the prairies during the Depression years her parents instilled in her at an early age the importance of helping others. After the death of her husband volunteering became even more important. Although she has some eyesight challenges she describes Friday as her “happy time” when she experiences the satisfaction of doing something meaningful for someone in need of a helping hand. “But I would not be there if it was not for the support I receive from the best team of volunteers ever who also have given many years of service. Not only do they do a great job for the customers they support each other,” says Isla. “When you begin volunteering you think it is just to help some cause but the rewards you receive yourself are immeasurable. You meet people, you make friends and have fun.”
At Volunteer Victoria we believe that, regardless of age or stage of life, everyone deserves an opportunity to volunteer.
