Wow, that is revealing. That first point-of-contact sets such a tone for people, yet it’s often not felt as a priority for non-profits who are trying to get the mission done. And reception falls into the vastly underrated “administrative” piece of non-profit work (which funders dearly want capped at 10%).

I’ve been considering the role of customer service and its sister, marketing, in non-profits. For-profits fully recognize that getting a message out, and providing quality experience when that message is received and acted on, takes time and money to ensure. Considerable budget goes towards it (far more of a budget, in many cases, than the costs of producing a product).

I think you hit the nail on the head in your article about emerging leaders. I am a communications associate for the READ Society and I think this sounds like a great opportunity to start a discussion about what leadership will look like in the non-profit world in the near future. Great initiative!
