Volunteering with United Now


The following is a post co-written by myself and United Now team members sharing their volunteer experiences in support of National Volunteer Week. We thank them for their important contributions!
 
To kick off National Volunteer Week, a team of volunteers from United Now took a couple of hours on Saturday morning to revitalize the garden at one of Threshold Housing Society’s youth transitional housing units. It’s National Volunteer Week!

Volunteer Victoria is celebrating our 35th anniversary as well as National Volunteer Week (April 18-24). We, along with our partner, the TELUS Victoria Community Board, are recognizing the 138,000 volunteers who contribute to our community this week! That means that 1 in 3 people in Greater Victoria volunteer with at least one community organization, if not several.

Work in Nonprofits

The HR Council for Non Profits conducted a major quantitative survey of Canadian non-profits in 2008. From this they have prepared a report on small non-profits in our sector.

Approximately 75% of non-profits have less than ten employees and over half (53%) have less than five employees. About 168,000 people work in these small non-profits. For every 100 employees who work in small non-profits, 75 are women, half are more than 45 years old, 81 are in permanent jobs (54 f/time, 27 p/time), 88 have post-secondary education, 40 have a university degree and 36 have worked …
