If you’ve walked into our office over the last month, you may have wondered where the sweet smell of candies and gingerbread were coming from. The answer is our meeting room! Yes, it was transformed into a sweet factory while we all worked together to create an entirely edible replica of our office building up on the 3rd floor of the Central Building downtown.

‘Tis the Season…

It seems hard to believe that the holiday season is almost upon us.  Each year, around this time, we notice an increase in phone calls from people wanting to know how they can volunteer.  The holidays are all about giving, so it is a natural time to think about helping others.  If you’ve been thinking about doing some volunteer work in preparation for, or during, the holidays we encourage you to start applying for positions now.

Social Media Project

In the Youth Program , we work with people under 30. Our approach to connecting with them generally relies on meeting face-to-face in classroom presentations, at career/volunteer fairs or when they drop by the office. Over the past year, we have realized that we need to start connecting with youth where they are at. Knowing that many youth under 30 are using Social Media made our decision to start the Social Media Project a no-brainer!

There are so many tools to choose from, but our research suggests that Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, YouTube and Flickr are good tools to get started …

Setting our Boundaries

The other day we held a workshop for individuals taking part in our Social Solutions project, which supports coordinators of volunteers at non-profit agencies that work in the areas of homelessness, housing, mental health and addictions.  The workshop was about resetting boundaries and was led by talented facilitator Dvora Levin.

Who among us couldn’t use a reminder to set (or defend) our boundaries now and then?  The workshop came at a very fortuitous time for some participants in particular, but in fact all of us were able to come up with areas of either our personal or professional lives where we could reestablish or reset boundaries.

We are very excited about launching our blog, and engaging with our community around topics of interest and importance to us all. Whether you are a volunteer, a student, an employee, a senior or just interested in learning more, we invite you to join the conversation!

We will cover it all, from our workshops and events, to information specifically geared to youth (age 15-29) as part of our Youth Volunteer Connections program. We will also invite guest bloggers to bring in a broader perspective and further encourage dialogue.
