Volunteer Victoria is a leader in building our
community through excellence in volunteerism and non-profit management.

At Volunteer Victoria we believe:
Volunteering is a critical component to creating and sustaining
a civil society and enhancing the quality of life of the community.
The Community benefits from a diverse group of volunteers, inclusive
of all community members.
It is important for community agencies to have access to resources that
support quality volunteer programs.
Volunteering gives individuals opportunities for personal growth and
development.

The core strategic areas through which we seek to achieve
our mission are:
Promoting Volunteerism
VV raises awareness of the power of service, encourages people to volunteer,
provides information about volunteerism and recognizes the contribution
of volunteers. Some examples include celebrating National Volunteer Week
and conducting volunteer fairs.
Building Capacity
VV helps voluntary sector organizations, and other groups and individuals
that work with volunteers, do a better job recruiting, managing and retaining
volunteers. Some examples include offering training programs, one-to-one
consultations, and providing support to organizations that work with volunteers.
Providing Leadership on Issues relating to Volunteerism
VV serves as a convenor for the community and a catalyst for action. We
work through local partnerships and collaborations with community organizations,
government, schools and community leaders to identify needs and mobilize
volunteer response. Some examples include speaking on behalf of volunteers,
convening or participating on committees and forums, and advising volunteers
of community needs.
Connecting People with Opportunities to Serve
VV provides people with easy access to a wide variety of opportunities
to connect to their community through service. Some examples include our
web site, targetting programs for special populations and offering recruitment
and referral services through a variety of media.

Victoria has a proud history of volunteering. Various volunteer
resource centres were run by concerned citizens until 1974 when the Greater
Victoria Volunteer Society was formed to operate the Victoria Volunteer
Bureau. The Volunteer Bureau became very successful by expanding services
to meet the community's evolving needs.
Over 16,000 volunteers are now recruited annually by our
organization and the number of member agencies has grown from 50 to over
280. Throughout the history of the organization the goals of volunteer
recruitment, capacity building, promotion and providing leadership for
the nonprofit sector have remained the same.
